SHORT GLANCES

The NFL

As a kid growing up in the Sixties I  became hooked on Pro Football.  The Eagles and Packers were my favorite teams and when the brash new kids on the block the AFL started gaining recognition it couldn’t get any better for a teenager.  My interest peaked in the late Seventies and has been in a steady decline to where I rarely watch a game and never watch the Super Bowl.  The drop in interest goes beyond the slowness of the game, and it has become a very boring game, much of it is how the game has devolved into what it is today.  The NFL is a slick corporate machine that has taken a fun game and molded it into a major marketing tool.  Those who play are spoiled prima donnas who actually believe that they matter.  Which is why it bothers me to be in the position to defend that cabal.

Once again the media storm is missing, perhaps intentionally, the cause of the thuggish behavior of the players.  To begin the Atlantic County Prosecutors Office should be the office facing the heat not the NFL Commissioners office for not arresting Ray Rice’s punk ass.  Then look at the culture these younger black players are coming from and it is no wonder things like this are seen as a growing problem.  Critics would rather blame a game that is admittedly violent and attempt to oust another “out of touch” white male executive.   The game has always been violent but did it cause the likes of a Franco Harris, Gale Sayers or Jim Brown to act like thugs off the field?  The culture of the younger black athlete of today has changed.  They have grown up with thuggish behavior glorified through their “music”.  What did you expect to happen when “knocking your bitch out” is constantly pounded through your headphones or speaker systems?  It is a programed behavior when combined with the break up of what once was a strong family unit you get the Ray Rice’s.  The problem won’t be corrected until these factors are recognized and corrected.

Atlantic City

It seems that the glitter that the casino business brought to Atlantic City has faded.  Since the first casino arrived I considered it as effective as putting lipstick on a pig.  Somehow, with all the billions of dollars that the casinos have brought in over the years it never really filtered down to the city residents.  A short stroll of two to three blocks from the casinos and you are transported to a third world nation of squalor.  Government in action or inaction.

But not to worry.  The city council just banned the sale of toy guns.  Citing the use of these toys as being used in robberies or suicide by cop schemes they took the courageous action to deprive little Billy of fun.  If they actually considered the effects of this goofy law they may have reconsidered.  Here is a common sense question for you; if you were going to be a victim of an “armed” robbery would you prefer the assailant to have a real weapon in his hand or a Mattel special?  It seems to me the more times toys are used the better for the victims.  The only risk taken is by the robber and should he be shot by someone who was defending themselves with a real gun then what is the loss to society?  Unfortunately for us, common sense and government actions rarely if ever meet anymore, at least the last 200 years.

Pennsylvania Politics

Here in Pennsylvania we have a race for the Governorship.  I guess there are only two guys running because the press refuses to give any time for the other “minor” candidates.  Here are the two in a nutshell.  Tom Corbett, the sitting Republican Governor who wants to be reelected.  He has kept spending somewhat under control and has not raised the income tax.  He has increased the gas tax however to the point that we drivers are guaranteed to be paying over $3.00 per gallon however low the price may drop.  The big accusation against him that his opponent is using is a cut in education funding.  This is absolutely false and anyone educated outside the Public School system would recognize it as such.  I guess the democrat ad has been effective because Corbett is in an ad refuting the charges and showing how much he has actually increased the spending to the Public Schools.  That ad was really effective and convinced me that I could never vote for someone who throws that much money away in the belief that it helps.

His opponent is Tom Wolfe.  He is a muti-millionaire who is your typical far left radical who dresses nicely.  This man will do to Pennsylvania what Obama has done to our nation.  His funding is coming primarily from a wealthier environmental whack  a doodle from out west.  Pennsylvania is a big fracking state (fracking as in oil) and fracking has helped revive some depressed areas and increased the employment in areas that are ignored by government.  Well, ol’ Tom wants to tax them out of Pennsylvania in order to be able to increase funding to the public schools or some such nonsense.  Leftist/liberal economics never make sense; they are the originators of the shell game and wasn’t a guy named Ponzi the founder of the New Democrat party along with FDR?  In fact FDR let him design the Social Security System as a reward.  But I digress.

Just  a little anecdote about why I will never vote for a democrat and I am baffled by the bulk of their supporters.  A couple of weeks ago I went to my son’s house to pick him up (we were going to a local gun show ironically).  As I backed into his driveway a nice new shiny black Mercedes pulled up and a man and woman got out to greet me believing me to be the homeowner.  They were campaigning for the democrat party and Tom Wolfe in particular.  I politely told them that I wasn’t sure that I was going to vote for the lesser of two evils and I was damn well not going to vote for Wolfe.  The man had a sense of humor to see what I was saying but the woman turned away a bit bothered.  I waited in my car for my son to finish with them and when he got into the car we watched them pull away he turned and said, “Nice car.  The party of the people huh?”.  It made me proud!

Isis And The War That Isn’t

Have you ever wondered why this Nation has not won a war since WWII?  It isn’t hard to figure out, you only have to open your eyes and be willing to see.  Our history since 1945 has been one of half measures and the results show it.  I do not think it would be wise for our current government to enter any battle, the leader does not have the testicular fortitude to not only see what has to be done but to see it completed.  Better to let him play with drones and order specific hits on people like some Mafia don.  If we are to fight Isis and any other fanatical group we have to fight a no holds bar war because they do the same.  They are doing that now knowing that the President will not do what is needed to complete the job.  It is flat out stupid to arm so called rebels because they will only be used against us in the near future.  We have only two certifiable allies in that region; the Israelis and the Kurds.  There is not one Islamic country that is trustworthy enough to arm and that includes Turkey.

The war that we will not fight is going to be coming to our shores in the not too distant future.  The United Nations is giving the US (and this government is accepting) 100,000 Islamic refugees from Syria.  Does that smell the least bit funny?  We should not accept any follower of Islam until Isis, Al- Qaeda and Iran are neutralized.  This, right after what amounted to an invasion on our southern border.  Did I say invasion? I meant invitation.

The war is on and we are losing it.  We have only ourselves to blame if we do not recover in time.
